welcome to the matrix
within the cybernetic theory we are discussing in film 142, the idea of information losing it's body is of key interest not only in our readings of Hayles but also in the movie The Matrix. the cinematography and digital effects of the film seem to play with this idea, by manipulating the visual information taken from the real and producing new meaning and an alternate reality on screen. information flows within the film in different forms and the film, like Neo, seems to be able to manipulate it at will. for instance, the keen effect of suspending the action of the story to rotate the camera around a protagonist. it's as if the film observer were given control of the scene and decided to change the angle on the fly. the actor's performance remains the same, but our reality has shifted as if the actor was simply data that need to be tweaked for some effect.
not to be forgotten is the matrix itself, which appears both as brillant reality and as encrypted raw data...that is until Neo frees his mind and decodes the Matrix (see image below).
