the bridge experience
i've never really been you're typical teenager. most teenagers like summers. less work, less responsibility, less clothing. all of that eluded me tho. it seems that long breaks and me just don't work. so, while most people might have considered ending their summer about three and a half weeks early to be a bad thing, i looked forward to it. couldn't wait actually. so, when harvey mudd sent me a letter saying that i could show up a little early, move in and "get a head start" i said sure. i'm really glad i did.

basically, 19 freshman show up early and start their first humanities class early. there's more to it of course; things like workshops in math, physux, chem, etc. why show up early to do work? to finish early when it counts of course. our hum class ended at fall break, which was, as debbie might put it, "schweeeet." and the trip to magic mountain didn't hurt.

it kinda started out like the real world...

you have a dorm
with 23 strangers
picked to spend
the end of their summers
trying to get along

getting along wasn't so hard tho, and we're still friends (beware the bridge mafia). the first day would remind almost anyone of six grade camp or something similar. we played the name game, which cam is very good at by now. once the awkwardness subsided, you could find random bridge people hanging out in AC (academic computing) playing with sheep.exe or in Linde lounge listening to seema retell the story of the two williams or the bridge mentors telling (warning) the new girls on the dating scene at mudd. and by the time magic mountain came around i think all of us were really glad we came. by the end, we had really formed a interesting unit (beware "the family") and wondered what the other frosh would be like. we also a bit anxious about being separated, but knew it would be nice to know what we were doing during disorientation.
